 Host: Paul Vens is a singer songwriter musician from the Netherlands. Paul brings the sounds and spirit from his homeland to our listeners worldwide. Some shows are in English and some are in Dutch.

Op jonge leeftijd ontdekte ik de magie tussen mens en natuur, en ging ik op zoek naar manieren om deze sferen weer te geven.
Op tienjarige leeftijd speelde ik mijn eerste klanken, op een zelfgemaakte gitaar.
In 1992 kreeg ik bij Oreade/Warner contracten waardoor mijn muziek internationaal uitgebracht kon worden, de albums “Promise”, “Aquarius” en “Son to the Father”.
Via mijn eigen independent label zijn er inmiddels 10 albums, een aantal boeken en een serie kunstkaarten verschenen.
Liefde voor het leven, spiritualiteit en de natuur zijn belangrijke ingrediënten in mijn werk.
Eind jaren negentig ontdekte ik via een pater de Tibetaanse Klankschalen.
Deze schalen hebben nu in mijn leven en in mijn muziek een belangrijke plaats.
Mijn CD “Daughters of Light” is een registratie van klankschalen, afgewisseld met gitaar-en piano-improvisaties.
Ik trad op voor KRO, IKON en OHM en mijn muziek is te beluisteren via de Concertzender, Peaceful Radio, TVNR en diverse buitenlandse radiozenders.
KRO tv maakte een documentaire over mijn leven na een BDE ervaring die ik had op jonge leeftijd en die mijn inzichten in het leven ingrijpend veranderden.

Rust en Ontspanning met Tibetaanse Klankschalen
1- Mother and Daughter – CD EarliestDaughters of Light
Al vele jaren verzorg ik concerten met Tibetaanse Klankschalen bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, dementerende bejaarden en dementerenden in de laatste levensfase. Het doel is hiervan rust, persoonlijke aandacht, verdieping en communicatie te creëren met hen die geen ‘gewone’ communicatie mogelijkheden (meer) hebben.
Waarom klankschalen?
Zelf zie ik een vraag in de ‘stille’ mens, voor wie het niet mogelijk is te praten. Met die mens ik wil graag toch een vorm van communicatie aangaan, wil ik een luisterend oor proberen te zijn. De klankschalen helpen me daarbij, ze helpen me de ander meer ‘te verstaan’. Zij zijn dus het middel om de ander in zijn beleving ‘aan te raken’ zonder woorden.
3- Discovering – CD Daughters of Light
De klankschalen die ik gebruik worden ook wel ‘zingende schalen’ genoemd. Ze zijn afkomstig uit Tibet. Tibetaanse klankschalen zijn in staat een verfijnde trilling uit te dragen door een waaier van boventonen en ondertonen. Er zijn juist geen wereldse melodietjes, ritmes of structuren te horen in het klankconcert. De lang doorklinkende trillingen hebben een bijzonder aangenaam en ontspannend effect op de luisteraar. Door de werking van de schalen beleeft de luisteraar zijn innerlijk leven dieper, rustiger en intensiever.
De serene klank van de schalen kan de luisteraar mee voeren naar zijn eigen stiltegebied. De luisteraar krijgt de mogelijkheid zich geestelijk en fysiek te ontspannen. Ervaringen variëren van het krijgen van een goede fysieke doorstroming in een ontspannen sfeer tot het ervaren van een overgave, een zijn met de omgeving, of soms de kosmos, hetgeen een verstillend en helend effect kan hebben. Een effect op de luisteraar is er altijd.
5- Wonderful Silence – CD Son to the Father
Verschillende reacties
De makkelijkst waarneembare reacties op de klanken van de klankschalen zijn de fysieke. De gevoelens zijn niet voor iedereen hetzelfde, wel gebeurt er bij iedereen altijd iets. Vaak zie ik dat de doorstroming in het lichaam verandert. Als gevolg van de ontspanning verbetert de bloedsomloop. Sommige mensen krijgen het aangenaam warm, of krijgen een mooie blos op hun wangen, raken in een sfeer van verwondering over hetgeen de schalen oproepen in het innerlijk. Want de trilling die door de aanslag van de schaal ontstaat brengt iets unieks bij de luisteraar in beweging wat niet door andere geluidsbronnen veroorzaakt kan worden.
Mensen die wel op de ‘gewone’ wijze kunnen communiceren praten later vaak over schoonheid of zuiverheid, welzijn. Sommigen is het gegeven daadwerkelijk een onbeschrijflijk mooi gezang te horen. (Niet voor niets is de Engelse naam voor klankschalen ‘singing bowls’, zingende schalen.) Het is mogelijk dat door te luisteren als het ware een ander licht op bestaande problemen geworpen wordt en dingen zich onverwacht oplossen.
7- The call from inside – CD Daughters of Light
Bij de dementerenden in de laatste levensfase is het niet meer mogelijk om verbaal te communiceren. Maar door met klankschalen te spelen communiceer je op een andere manier. De luisteraar ondergaat het bad van geluiden, boventonen en ondertonen. Verschillende malen ’zag’ ik dat de dagelijkse dingen van wereldlijke aard zich verkleinen en dat innerlijke essentiële energie zich duidelijker manifesteert en een gevoel van eenwording ontstond. Een ander, meer vergeten, niet alledaags deel van het mens-zijn werd aangeraakt.
Wat ik vaak waarneem als ik speel bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking, dementerenden, en stervenden, is juist een verstillende, harmoniserende overgave van de mens aan zichzelf, en met zichzelf bedoel ik dan zijn meest wezenlijke deel, datgene wat het dichtst bij de oorsprong van ‘het zelf’ ligt.
9- Peace of the Heart – CD Daughters of Light
Ook ken ik ervaringen van nabestaanden, waar tijdens het laatste momenten voor het sterven de patiënt om het geluid van een klankschaal vroeg, zodat het ‘overgaan’ makkelijker zou zijn.
Er ligt een potentieel om emotionele angsten te doen verstillen, of te helen. Dit alles enkel en alleen door je stille, luisterende aanwezigheid en de serene klank van de schalen. Daarbij heeft iedere luisteraar zijn eigen timing, dat wil zeggen dat er in hem of haar begrenzingen aanwezig kunnen zijn en dat een diepere overgave aan zichzelf niet meteen aan de orde is, misschien later wel. Soms moet men eerst meer vertrouwd raken met de uitnodigende sfeer van de schalen!
11- Daughters of Light – CD Daughters of Light
Gelukkig zie ik steeds meer mensen in de zorg die het positieve effect opmerken dat de klanksessies hebben op de mensen waar zij voor werken. Onder andere De Norbertushof in Gennep organiseert regelmatig een sessie voor hun dementerenden in laatste levensfase. De groepsleiding is er duidelijk over: “Tijdens deze ochtend is het een mooie ervaring om te zien dat de bewoners totaal ontspannen raken. Onrustige bewoners worden rustig en het is muisstil, er wordt geluisterd. Iedere bewoner beleeft het op zijn eigen manier, maar de sfeer straalt enorm veel rust uit. Het is echt geweldig om te beleven.”
Niet alleen ikzelf, ook de verzorger, verpleger of andere betrokkenen van de dementerende kunnen wezenlijke veranderingen waarnemen. Ze merken subtiele nuances in het gedrag van de ander.
13-Song for a safe Home – CD Daughters of Light
Het effect van de klankschalen vindt plaats op zowel het fysieke, emotionele als in het energetische gebied van de luisteraar. Mocht je zelf eens in de gelegenheid zijn een sessie mee te maken met bewoners in verzorghuizen, dan is het nuttig om je aandacht te richten op een stille waarneming van het proces dat de luisteraar ondergaat. Ook voor jezelf is dat fijn!
Als verzorgende kan het makkelijker worden over je eigen dagelijkse grenzen heen te kijken en te luisteren naar de innerlijke bewegingen die de oudere maakt. Een houding vinden in jezelf om te aanvaarden dat er een wereld is die je met je fysieke oog en oor niet kunt waarnemen, maar wel invloed heeft op het leven. Immers, stilte roept andere dingen op. Realiseer je dat de er veel boventonen vrijkomen bij het geluid van de klankschalen, je kunt ze niet horen, maar ze zijn er en hebben invloed. Net zoiets als de subtiliteit van zuurstof, onzichtbaar maar erg nodig en werkend in de levensprocessen.
Zo is de energetische wereld actief en kunnen we soms zien waar bijvoorbeeld doorstroming is of waar weerstand is, overgave, verstilling of harmonie…
15-Butterfly in the Night III – CD Playing in the Fields
Zelf leerde ik de bijzondere werking van de Tibetaanse klankschalen via een bevriende pater kennen. Hij zei me: “Wat ik de ander niet met woorden kan zeggen, kan ik wel met de klank van deze schalen.” Dit was voor mij het antwoord op vragen die ik had als muzikant. Het moment was daar om deze klankschalen te gaan ontdekken en een nieuwe weg te vinden om ook mijn boodschap verder te kunnen uitdragen. Op de momenten waar ik voor mijn gevoelens geen woorden had, was ik al bezig met het componeren van instrumentale muziek. Maar nu had ik instrumenten gevonden die van een eenvoud waren, waarmee ik een atmosfeer kon creëren van openheid, verstilling, waarmee ik iets kon meedelen aan zoveel verschillende ‘levensfases’ of levende creaturen. Want in mijn bewustzijn ken ik een glimp van intense harmonie, stilte en liefde. Ik ervoer deze onder andere tijdens de sessies die ik mocht ervaren bij de pater. Nu ervaar ik ze regelmatig zelf tijdens klankschalensessies. Via de muziek van de schalen nodig ik de ander uit tot die innerlijke sferen. Vreugde is mijn deel wanneer ik het gevoel heb dan non-verbaal toch werkelijk met de ander te communiceren.

Klankschalen verrijken ons
Al tientallen jaren gebruiken klankschalenspelers in het westen het luisteren naar de schalen als middel om evenwicht, verstilling en zelfacceptatie te bevorderen. Wat steeds meer meetbaar en aantoonbaar wordt is de werking van trilling, resonantie op de mens en natuur. Allerlei experimenten met geluidsbronnen hebben duidelijk gemaakt dat geluid, trilling, muziek van levensbelang is en zelfs vormkracht heeft. In Nederland zijn er verschillende opleidingen om klank- of resonantie- of tuintherapeut te worden.
Scholen waar mensen leren dat alles een voelbare uitstraling heeft, afhankelijk van de vitaliteit van het levende organisme, leren dat de mens de verbindende schakel kan zijn bij veranderingsprocessen. Deze opleidingen zijn erop gericht de subtiele trillingen in de natuur en kosmos te leren waarnemen en de levensenergie positief te beïnvloeden. Wanneer we de verfijnde trillingen en hun invloed in de wereld (her)ontdekken, ze respecteren en laten klinken met hart en ziel voor onszelf en voor de ander, speciaal voor hen die afhankelijk zijn van onze wil om met hen te communiceren, verrijkt het ons leven.

Rest and Relaxation with Tibetan Singing Bowls

Yes Friends I like to invite you into another world, another way of thinking maybe... today we’ll arrive in the world of strangs vibrations by the Tibetian Singing bowls... and the question is, what can they do for us.... So now for Radio Artist First Network a total different program, about working with Tibetan Singing Bowls, in the institutes for care, hospitals, institutes for psychiatric patients and the many, many silent old people, who are waiting for... yes, waiting for what..?
What can we do for them, maybe your parents, or grand-parents are living there too, more or less in silence. You know the nurses have no time to talk or to listen to them, that is the situation here in Holland, the Netherlands and i believe it is in many countries like here. Some of these old people are with one foot arrived in the other world, and don t speak anymore the language that we speak. They do not have questions for the normal world anymore.
What can we do..? I discovered 20 years ago the possibilities of the Tibetan Singing Bowls.
These Singing Bowls are often made in Tibetan the Himalaya and used by the local monks for many things, for example they like to teach the young monks, children, that there is a relation between the plants and the trees, the human beings and the planets... and they use these singings bowls to create silence and concentration because they want arrive into another inside level... not the thinking but first they want to discover a kind of silence ...
3. Discovering – CD Daughters of Light
Since many Years I give concerts with the Tibetan Singing Bowls.
Some people say these Bowls are made with seven different kinds of metal, but somehow it doesn’t matter, i think the old creatures in the past want to say, 7 is all, everything is 7 so a symbol for the the whole world, or the whole body. Some of these Singing bowls are more then 4000 years old and are found in Japan and other countries too
The people who are listening to these little, but intensive concerts are people with a mental handicap, elderly dement people and Alzheimer clients in the last period of their life. What I hope to create is rest, relaxation, personal attention and a new kind of communication, without words, just only sound. Especially for people who have no possibilities anymore for a ‘normal’ communication, for the many “silent people”.
I call them the ‘Silent People’.
5. Wonderful Silence – CD Son to the Father Why we talk about Singing Bowls ?
More and more I see “Silent People”, for whom talking is no longer possible. Something within me wants to create a form of communication, wants to be a listening ear for them. The singing Bowls help me to hear more, understand better what the other person wants to say, where he or she is... The Singing Bowls help me to touch the other without words. The Singing Bowls are made in Tibet and express, in a serene and subtle way, many high and low tones. You won’t hear melodies, rhythms or well-known structures in the concerts, but it is possible that the listener will have an experience of silence, a more intense inner rest. The listener can relax physically and mentally, they can feel the improved circulation of warmth, blood, energy which can create a harmonious connection to the environment, the cosmic unity. This can create inner silence or healing, more connected to the inner world. Much is possible, so,metimes just only relaxation, sometimes see colours, some feel harmony, some become very aware of their own feelings, but they can look at it quiet.. 7. The call from inside – CD Daughters of Light Different reactions
The reactions of different listeners are different, but there is always an effect. Some people discover a blush on their cheeks, arrive in an atmosphere of wondering about the feelings that the Singing Bowls create. The unique vibration of the singing bowls creates a unique movement within the body of the listeners, which cannot be created by other instruments or sounds! People, who can still talk about this experience in the ‘normal’ way, talk about: abandoning oneself to oneself, to serenity, rest, harmony, relaxation on a deep level, wellness! Sometimes people really hear a wonderful ‘singing’ somewhere inside.
9. Peace of the Heart – CD Daughters of Light
Sometimes the problems that there are, are seen on another level or disappear unexpectedly. With the dement people in their last days you cannot communicate with words, but by playing the Singing Bowls, there is communication in another way. Several times I have seen that the outside world becomes smaller and the inner energy becomes more awake and more essential, with an unusual feeling of unity. Like you have touched an almost forgotten part of human life which is not normally touched in daily life.
What I see in the life of the people with a mental handicap is a silent, harmonious abandonment to oneself, to the most imporstant part of himself, the part that is the source of the spiritual person.

There is the man who wants to hear the sound of the Singing Bowls just before he dies, to make the last step to the other world easier. There is a potential to create silence or healing in emotional fears. Only by a silent and listening presence and the serene sound of the Singing Bowls.
But every listener has of course his own relationship to himself, there may be limits, perhaps people are not in harmony, or do not trust this ‘new world’, the sound of the Singing Bowls. But then sometimes, the second time produces a different effect and more perhaps more intense than the first experience.
13. Song for a safe Home – CD Daughters of Light Work in the Care and use the Singing Bowls sometimes
If you are working in the Care services it can be easier to alter your normal limits a little especially if you listen more to the inner movement that your client makes. Maybe you can find a way to accept that there is a world that you cannot see with your physical eyes, but which has a strong influence on our lives. Realize that there are vibrations that you cannot hear but which are working too, like the subtlety of oxygen, you cannot see it, but it is present and necessary to the processes of life. So the energetic world is active and sometimes you can see a change in the inner circulation, resistance lessens, silence, harmony, peace… My song Butterfly in the night tells about the transformation, about live and death, about the body and the soul:

I learned to discover the effect of the Singing Bowls from a monk, a good friend of mine. And I understood when he said: “what I cannot say with words, I can say with the sound of these Bowls”. These words were the answer to many questions I had as a musician. The moment had arrived and I had found a new way to express my message to other people. In the moments that I had no words to tell my feelings, I was already composing instrumental music, but now I’ve found the instruments, which in fact so simply, help me to create an atmosphere of finding openness, silence, unity.
I have found a new way to share atmospheres with so many different living creatures.
In my awareness I have known the open door to intense harmony, silence and borderless love. I re-discovered these feelings again in the sessions with my friend the monk... and now there are moments I feel this again during the sessions with the listeners. With the help of the Singing Bowl vibrations I can invite the other person to the inner atmospheres which gives me a joyful feeling as I am in real communication with the ‘silent people’!

Different experiences with different sounds has made it clear that vibration, and music is important for all life and has the force to create forms! When we learn again that everything has an energetic charisma, depending on the vitality of the organism, and we learn that the human being, you, can be the key to create a positive change in the processes of life. When we discover again the finest vibrations and their influence in the world, respect them and sing and play them with our hearts and soul for yourself and for the other, especially for those who are dependent on our will to communicate with them... it will make our lives more rich!
